Goleman Quote

|

“No creature can fly with just one wing. Gifted leadership occurs where heart and head – feeling and thought – meet. These are the two wings that allow a leader to soar.”

To me this means that there are two parts to being a great leader. These two parts are the heart and head. I think that heart could mean traits such as compassion for the people around you, being empathetic, passion for what you are doing, putting others before you, and just being able to relate to people. I think the head part of this could bean knowledge of the subject you are in, knowing how to handle tough situations, and some type of education. When we met Bea Salazar and Diana Franzetti it was obvious that Bea was the heart of the organization and Diana was the head. It didnt matter that Bea did not have any type of highschool education, all that mattered was that she loved the kids and in her heart knew she had to heal them. Because of her big heart she was able to start Beas kids and along came Diana, the head of the organization. With both the head and the heart Bea has been able to grow Beas kids to now four different locations.

James, this is a super post -- it analyzes the quote well and incorporates our experience from class (in this case, a leader visit) to explain your answer.
I still do not see your Me I Want to Be POst, so get that one in as soon as you can.
You have be excellent on the blog in terms of commenting on other's blog posts. This will be important to your final blog grade as it shows your willingness to build on the thoughts of others.
My big challenge to you for the second half of the course is to step up your in class collaboration and participation. Class participation -- what you share, how you build on the thoughts of others, the thoughtfulness of the questions you ask our visitors -- are a significant part of your grade. You are quiet by nature, I know, but I still know you are too bright for us to be hearing so little from you! Be a contribution; I know you can do it!

I thought this quote was well analyzed by you. Your explanation for the meaning of "heart" and "head" in the quote is dead on in my opinion. Like you said a leader has to be empathetic and not just well educated to lead a group. The parallels you drew between the quote and our interview with Bea and Diana are superb. I am in full agreement that Bea is the heart and Diana is the head. Overall excellent post.
